Empowerment Self-Defense
Program and Courses
Empowerment Self-Defense (ESD) is a proactive, practical approach to personal safety that helps individuals develop the awareness, skills, confidence, and strategies needed to navigate potentially unsafe situations.
Our programs are inclusive and open to people of all communities, backgrounds, identities, ages, and levels of experience. While Empowerment Self-Defense has a strong history of supporting women and communities disproportionately affected by violence, the principles and skills can benefit anyone seeking to strengthen their personal safety, confidence, and sense of empowerment.
ESD goes beyond physical self-defense. Participants learn practical strategies for awareness, boundary-setting, assertive communication, recognizing risk, de-escalation, decision-making, and responding effectively to unwanted or threatening situations. When appropriate, physical self-defense skills are also incorporated.
Our approach recognizes that safety and violence are influenced by individual, social, cultural, and systemic factors. Programs are designed to be respectful, inclusive, trauma-informed, and responsive to the needs and experiences of participants.
Empowerment Self-Defense can be delivered through workshops, courses, and ongoing training, and can be adapted for organizations, schools, workplaces, community groups, and diverse populations.
The goal is empowerment: helping people build practical skills, confidence, awareness, and personal agency so they can make informed choices and navigate the world with a stronger sense of safety and self-confidence.
